Laser In-Situ Keratomileusis (LASIK) Alegretto
Wave Eye-Q Laser or the VISX Laser system involves creating
a precise thin superficial flap with the Intralase femtosecond laser.
The flap is raised, and an ablation is performed to reshape the
cornea with the aid of an eye tracker with the excimer laser, centered
on the pupillary area. The flap is then replaced without sutures.
The entire procedure is performed under topical anesthesia as an
outpatient procedure.

Wave Eye-Q Laser
OptiLASIK™ Laser Vision Correction is backed by the innovative
technology and advanced performance of the ALLEGRETTO WAVE®
Eye-Q Laser.
Equipped
with all the advantages of the well proven ALLEGRETTO WAVE®
Excimer Laser technology, the ALLEGRETTO WAVE® Eye-Q is one
step closer to optimal laser vision correction.
The
WaveLight® ALLEGRETTO WAVE® Excimer Laser was designed based
on an ideal that was once only an imagination: a system with shortened
surgery times, innovative and reliable eye tracking and a clear
ergonomic concept. An enhanced pulse frequency of 400 Hz provides
even faster treatments. The laser also includes an eye-tracking
system adjusted to the high speed of the laser beam and a cross
line projector for precise centration.
Its
proven state-of-the-art technology provides excellent results in
both Wavefront Optimized® and wavefront-guided laser vision
correction. The Eye-Q provides the physician and patient both safety
and reliability.
The Intralase system creates a corneal flap of a precise thickness
and diameter with a lower suction level than a standard microkeratome
without using a blade. this makes creating a flap safer than standard
microkeratomes using higher suction and blades.
Intralase presents proprietary
femtosecond laser technology that will enable patients to choose
vision correction surgery with confidence. The Intralase Pulsion™
FS Laser offers refractive surgeons and incomparable safety platform,
optimal precision and total control as the only All-Laser alternative
to the mechanical microkeratome.
VISX invented the technology
for vision correction more than 15 years ago. The VISX
laser has FDA approval to treat myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism.
Dr. Salz was principal Investigator for 4 different FDA studies
for VISX approval.
LASIK Advantages:
* •Minimal post-operative discomfort
* •Rapid visual recovery-usually next day
* •Superior results in moderate & high myopia, astigmatism,
and hyperopia
* •Reduced risk of corneal haze in higher corrections
* •Re-operations (enhancements) easier
Photorefractive Keratectomy
involves sculpting the surface of the cornea to a new curvature
with a special cold laser (eximer) by vaporizing the surface layer
through a series of precise laser pulses under computer control.
PRK in the United States has been approved by the FDA for the correction
of myopia an hyperopia. Dr Salz has performed PRK on thousands of
eyes since 1990 Wavefront based LASIK or PRKWavefront based treatment measures not only the patient's glasses
prescription (lower order aberration) but also measures other aberrations
(higher order aberrations) which are present to varying degrees
in all eyes, even the 20'20 eyes of pilots. The wavefront provides
a unique "finger print" of the eye which is different
for each patient even if they have the same glasses prescription.
Conventional laser vision correction often significantly increases
these higher order aberrations which can affect the quality of night
vision and contrast sensitivity. Wavefront based treatments attempt
to reduce or minimize any increase in higher order aberrations by
inputting the wavefront measurements into the laser to be used for
the laser vision correction. In conventional laser vision surgery,
only the patient's prescription is entered into the laser.
NearVision CK (Conductive Keratoplasty)can change how the eye focuses light by reshaping the cornea
to improve near vision. It uses a controlled release of radiofrequency
(RF) energy to shrink corneal tissue, which steepens the cornea.
This steepening creates a safe and predictable modification to the
topographical (surface) curvature of the cornea for the temporary
reduction of presbyopic and hyperopic symptoms. CK(R) is usually
performed on only one eye and is designed to reduce the dependence
on reading glasses.
Clear Lens Extraction (CLE)
involves the removal of the internal lens of the eye, as in a cataract
operation. A lens implant of a stronger power, as calculated by
special measurements and formulas, is then placed inside the eye.
Phakic Intraocular Lens (PIOL)
involves placement of a lens implant inside the eye for the correction
of either nearsightedness or farsightedness. This lens becomes in
effect an internal contact lens inside the eye rather than on the
surface of the eye. The lens manufactured by STAAR Surgical received
final FDA approval in 2006.
