Why is MyVision Changing? Many of us are farsighted - a condition in which the cornea is not curved enough or the eye is not long enough. Farsightedness causes light rays to focus behind the retina, leading to blurred vision. In youth, the lenses of the eyes can compensate for low to moderate amounts of farsightedness by changing their shape to focus light rays properly on the retina. With increasing age, due to increasing presbyopia, farsighted persons have increasing difficulty seeing objects Optimal Keratoplasty (Opti-K™) is performed outside the visual zone (where you actually “see”). Using two concentric rings of laser energy delivered outside the visual zone of the eye, Opti-K™ uses mild heat to change the shape of the cornea. The procedure enhances your ability to see distant objects more clearly. Opti-K™ has received CE Mark approval in Europe. Currently Opti-K™ is undergoing FDA clinical trials in the United States. We are seeking patients to demonstrate safety and efficacy under strict FDA guidelines.
What Should I Expect?
For Optimal Keratoplasty (Opti-K™), the physician will first instill anesthetic drops into your study eye and will place a patch over your other eye to block light. Next the physician will place an illuminated light cup between your eyelids, contacting your cornea with a sapphire lens. You will be a asked to gaze at the center of a blinking fixation light to help align your eye. Then suction will be applied to stabilize the light cup on your eye. Laser energy will be applied for less than 3 seconds during which you will hear three beeps telling us the treatment has started and finished. Before, during, and after the treatment, your physician will be carefully following your progress on a video monitor. Finally, eye care instructions and your important follow up visits will be scheduled.
